When time stops

rope bridge sapa vietnap“Come on!!” she bounced impatiently in front of him, her face beaming with excitement. The adrenaline pumping in his body made his heart feel like it wanted to pounce out of his chest. He looked ahead, trying to avoid looking down.

A rope bridge extended in front of him. It was everything but what you would describe as ‘safe’. But this is what she described as “an adventure”. “Something different; something spectacular; something out of the ordinary,” she had told him.

Come on!! It’s either this or skydiving!”

“I’d much rather do the latter at the moment,” he replied trying to contain the tremor in his voice.

“Well, if a step breaks on the way we might do both!” She joked, but deep inside she was as scared as he was terrified.

He paused for a moment, allowing himself to inhale the amazing scenery that surrounded him. It was all so serene; so quiet; so calm. It was as if time had stopped.

That is how he always felt with her. As if nothing and no one else mattered. It was a record for him. Falling so deeply and feeling so much in such a short time. But it was one he was happy to break again and again if it meant being with her and experiencing so much more than he could have even imagined before she came along.

“Come on! It’ll be dark soon.” She extended her hand as she pranced ahead bravely feigning a first step.

“Wait!” he called out.  He took her hand and aligned himself beside her.

Together.”

Quicken your heartbeat

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a8AU5m2uuX0/UrhdPNA44JI/AAAAAAAABLs/ZCAgiP7gAY0/s1600/Tropic+Waterfall+-+Animated+Wallpaper3.jpgWe are our memories.

The moments we create.

The experiences we live.

The feelings we share.

The thoughts we make.

So quicken your heartbeat, to live a little wilder, to laugh a little harder and to love a little deeper.

Let your pulse race to live a little stronger and fill your life with those instants that take your breath away.

Allow yourself to live as fully as possible and become better, stronger and happier with each passing day.

The secret of the clock

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/8b/21/73/8b217389a0dfee194b8779f5664126af.jpgWhen the house was silent, it was the only thing that could be heard. But even above the voices, its ticking sounded strongly, giving rhythm to the time that passed. It alerted its co-residents as to the time of day, the minutes and hours that passed by. But it also reminded them of that wonderful day when they first bought it and made it an intrinsic part of their home.

The couple that owned it was one that had already been together for half a century and continued to love each other as deeply, truly and wholly as the first day they met. The cuckoo clock was a souvenir from a winter holiday in the Alps. One where they fully enjoyed the festive season, the snow, the joy and the glow that the decorations brought along, and the carefreeness of becoming a child again. It served as a reminder that time is the moments you spend enjoying your existence.

As the cuckoo sprung out of its little home upon every half hour, the people of its home became all the more aware of how quickly time passes. Of how important it thus becomes to live every moment as it comes, to embrace the people surrounding you, to share the love in your heart, and to allow your subconscious to be without remorse and unfulfilled ambitions.

The cuckoo called out to them to live, and not just exist. Because it is the memories of a life well spent that fill our hearts with the energy to carry on.

Happy New Year, make it the greatest one yet!

Three lives

http://grandvoyageitaly.weebly.com/uploads/3/7/2/7/37277491/3805826_orig.jpg?332All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret.” Gabriel Garcia Marquez believed that we create who we are by what we share. For example, the public life is that which any ordinary person can see of you; the private life is that open only to close friends, loved ones and family, or to someone who is willing to investigate and discover it; and the secret life is that that which is kept only to oneself (and sometimes even from oneself!).

Our personality is formed according to the experiences we have, the relationships we create, and the things we share with others. Perhaps in this digital age, it becomes harder to have a private or secret life, but we all have things we only disclose to those closest to ones, and thoughts that we only keep to ourselves.

The things we let out are what makes us who we are. But it is also those things we don’t say, that influence who we become. It takes strength and courage to let people into your life, let alone your mind and heart. And it is only with time that you manage to discern who those truly worth it really are.

What we need to remember though, is that in the end, we only have one life to live. So let’s make the most of it.

The robbers of our thoughts

http://www.chinatour.com/uploads/1404895010.jpgWe think too much. So much that having second thoughts seems natural. Only they come for almost everything and steal away the thunder of the impulses we make as first thoughts. Then slowly the excitement of what we first considered begins to fade away, transforming into doubt and allowing those second thoughts to question all the actions and choices we make.

Euripedes had said, “among mortals, second thoughts are wisest”. Sometimes, however, dwelling too much on a decision to take will only fill you with even more doubt, to the extent that you will never be truly satisfied with whatever choice you finally do make.

Sometimes we just need the impulses. To spice up our lives. To discover that not everything needs to be planned. And to realise that, for whatever reason, there are things that just happen. And we are happier because they do. With no questions, no doubts, no second thoughts.

Handing over the reins (4 whispering years later)

red sunsetThere is that moment when the day hands over the reins to the night. It is that moment when the sky is illuminated with shades of colour you wouldn’t otherwise see. And it is at that very moment that you understand that whatever is going on in your head causing extreme worry is in fact futile. Because all that really matters is that very moment. That “now” that you so often forget to live.

Sometimes to truly relax, you need to hand over the reins. To stop being so obsessively concerned with everything, over-analyzing and searching for meaning in things that just happen. Sometimes you just need to breathe and go with the flow. You’d be surprised at how many things fall into place when you stop trying so hard. And you’ll be amazed at the people who change your life for the better even when you paid no attention to them at first.

We all need that luxury of doing nothing and embracing those moments as they come. It is refreshing to say the least. And it adds an extra beat to your heart.

P.S. Four years ago, on 7 August, I started this blog and I’m glad to say that I’ve seen myself grow alongside and through it. Because you need a friend and a confidante in every moment of life. So, to you also: Thank you for reading and supporting me! The best is yet to come!

Thoughts in secret

http://40.media.tumblr.com/adefb125c4005b411df7ab37f64e9aba/tumblr_nyva16N6861s1vn29o1_500.jpgThere are things you realise as time passes. As you mature, as you enrich your experiences, as you widen your perspectives. You acknowledge that the world is not (always) the wonderland you want it to be, nor is it as idyllic and welcoming as you once thought it was. In fact, everything is a bit more complicated than you want to believe.

Human relationships are the most difficult of all. Because as you grow older – in both years and knowledge – you become more selective. In the people you keep around you, in what you want to share with them, in what and who you feel is worth your time. You also grow tired of pretending to be nice all the time and want some time to unravel yourself, carefree from the fear of people judging, misunderstanding or criticizing you.

As your time in this crazy world expands, you also witness how peculiar human beings are. How they can so easily speak a thousand words and make airborne plans that can just as easily evaporate and disappear. How you can meet and become friends with people at the flick of a finger, but as quickly as that you can become shadows of acquaintances. Friendships form and break in abundance in a person’s lifetime, but you will soon realise who it is you truly want on your side. It is those people you seek when you’re having fun to share in your happiness, and the same ones you search for when you want a company in your silence. It is the people who understand you without words. With a simple look in your eyes, a nod, and a hug. Because sometimes that is all you really need. Someone to show you unconditional love and support. To remind you that people aren’t really made to be alone all the time.

The dangers of living on the edge

http://img09.deviantart.net/afbe/i/2012/154/f/6/living_on_the_edge_by_bendianna-d5261od.jpgIt’s not what you think. The danger of living on the edge is not that you’ll stumble and fall over. No. It’s that once you step back, everything will seem too dull.

Because, let’s face it, we all need that adrenaline rush from time to time. That feeling of excitement you get when you’re doing something you’re passionate about. Or when you’re racing against time to reach a deadline. Or even when you’re simply daydreaming about all the things you are determined to soon accomplish.

It’s a great feeling to have this constant buzz in your veins. To feel you heart pumping fast and to be happy about being so…well, “on-edge”. For some, it is a way of life. To not have time to be bored. To not even have time to consider the fact that 24 hours in a day are not enough. For others, it is just too much going on.

But for those who are used to being constantly engaged with stuff to do, with emotions, and with never-ending obligations/passions, living “on-edge” is routine.

The danger comes when you suddenly find yourself forced to step back and take a deep breath. When a cold or an illness overpowers you. When you run out of so many things to do (it does happen). Or when you simply allow yourself to lie on the coach and relax, doing absolutely nothing. Having spent days and months with little sleep and in constant motion, this is when the danger becomes more evident. It comes in the notion of boredom. Because that is what happens.

It is like when you go dancing for five nights in a row. That “happy feet syndrome” becomes part of who you are, and you are addicted to swaying as soon as music sounds. When the music stops and you have to sit down, it all seems too boring for you.

The same applies to when you are running. You run through parks, avenues, busy streets and neighborhoods; observing people, animals and noises. But when you stop, walking seems just so…dull.

It is dangerous to live a life in constant agitation. But it is equally hazardous to live one which you don’t enjoy to the fullest. The key is to find the right balance between the two. To know when to run and when to walk, when to dance and when to sit, when to stress out and when to relax.

Lesson of the day

sleep deprived owlYou know that feeling you get towards the end of the day, when you realise that going to bed late the previous night was a bad idea? It’s because the tiredness catches up with you and you’re suddenly drained, to the extent that even coffee makes you sleepy now.

It’s nice exploiting to the fullest every waking hour you have. So much, that you are even out of the country and back during the week without anyone realizing. Or to the point that you have taken multitasking to another level with the amount of things you do.

But there is one thing that you need to run all of this: just like an engine needs fuel, you need sleep. And it is not easy. Because when you finally get comfortable and curl up in bed, you suddenly remember everything you need to do and become wide awake again. In a vicious-circle-like phase, you’ll be back to feeling sleepy the next afternoon, right in the middle of all those things you just mentally noted you need to complete.

Whatever the case, we all need to find a few extra hours to catch up on this vital life process. You’ll hear a lot about what sleep deprivation can do – increase your need for food, add extra pounds, encourage wrinkles, diminish your memory. Most of all, you won’t be able to fully process everything you are so actively engaged in, if you are not adequately rested and awake to enjoy them!

New Year thoughts

http://www.shamoozal.com/nerdlog/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/new_years_12.gifWhenever a year ends, you really only wish for one thing: that the new one will be (even) better. That it will find you smiling broadly, laughing wholeheartedly, loving deeply, and enjoying every second.

But before the clock strikes midnight and the current year becomes history, you do look back and reminisce on all that you’ve been through these past 365 days, what you’ve learnt, what you’ve achieved, the experiences you’ve gained, how much fun you had, how much you hurt, but most of all, how you survived. Every year that passes leaves a mark on your person, no matter how much or quickly it may fade. It means you’ve grown, you’ve learnt how to become better, stronger and more confident. It means you have become a bit wiser than before, and can exploit that newfound knowledge to reach even greater heights.

The New Year finds us all aspiring for more, wishing each other the very best – happiness, health, and love – and hoping that this will be the year when we (finally) realise our dreams. It’s good to start the year with such optimism. The difficult part is to maintain it all the year through, and start each of its 366 days (yes, 2016 is a leap year!) with a glowing smile.

There are so many wonderful and inspiring quotes to share on the eve of the New Year. For example, Neil Gaiman expresses the hope “that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something. So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

Here’s another bright wish by D.Simone:

May Light always surround you;
Hope kindle and rebound you.
May your Hurts turn to Healing;
Your Heart embrace Feeling.
May Wounds become Wisdom;
Every Kindness a Prism.
May Laughter infect you;
Your Passion resurrect you.
May Goodness inspire
your Deepest Desires.
Through all that you Reach For,
May your arms Never Tire
.”

It is never too late to be what you might have been.” (George Eliot).

So go out there and make this the best year yet, until the next one. Be daring and bold; young at heart; but mature in mind; and never forget that life was given to us to make the most out of it!

Happy New Year!
