Changing seasons

It’s when the temperature still feels like summer, yet the calendar tells you there’s been a change of season. It’s when you stubbornly refuse to part your summer outfits, yet a cold night breeze forces you to acknowledge the change that is on its way.

It’s not winter that is coming yet. It’s autumn that is already here. And you realise it as soon as the first clouds darken the sky and the first sounds of rain cause you to stir out of your afternoon nap.

It’s when you find out that you do need a sweater, if not a jacket, to walk out during the evenings, and when you have to check the weather in case you need to make an umbrella an essential part of your bag.

Something comes with this change of season. It is all the talk of a new start, with everyone blatantly flagging how excited they are for new goals, new beginnings etc etc. By the time December arrives, all of this will be forgotten.

Yet, there is a sweet melancholy that arrives with the autumn clouds; the change in the atmosphere and the crackling of fallen leaves on the ground. It is perhaps the acknowledgement that things are indeed changing, no matter how much you try to deny it. We change because it is how we move on. How we evolve. Whether we like it or not, we are forced to do something different with every new season. Boredom leads to illnesses more of the mind than the body. So we need to be creative, to do things, to keep our minds busy. There is a beauty in every (changing) month or season. We just have to be open enough to welcome it in.

Season in bloom

Once the season changed, they would take the garden furniture out and set it in its usual place under the large oak tree. They would spend an entire morning washing the winter dust off; playfully splashing each other with the garden hose. Then, they would allow the sun’s rays to rejuvenate them with new life, ready for the new summer memories that were to be created.

Spring was their favourite time. It was when everything in bloom reminded them that even after a harsh and dark winter, it would always be warm and bright again. You just had to wait.

Autumn scenes

autumn-luxembourgIt’s when the weather changes that you see that different side of people you always suspected was there but never truly saw. It’s when the leaves change from green to yellow-orange-brown; when they fall and they crunch as you walk on them that you feel something peculiar take over the air. It’s that sense that another season arrives and with it other expectations, longings, desires, another form of waiting; waiting for something unknown but exciting simultaneously.

Christine gazed out the window at the autumn carpet that now decorated the palace gardens. The fallen leaves imbued a note of melancholy to the marble arches and fountains that for centuries stood in place. She was waiting for something. Maybe even someone. Perhaps a prince charming on a white stallion. But right now, she would be satisfied with even the slightest of actions out of the ordinary. Any simple gesture showing her that someone cared. Someone in particular.

As the leaves rustled in the wind, she considered it pointless, and turned away from the large window.

That is when it happened though.

The faint crackle of leaves being trodden upon. And then the ticking of pebbles being thrown on the glass.

Christine ran back to the window and looked out, her heart beating fast with excitement.

Right underneath stood, dressed in elegant attire fit for royalty, Diego, the errant boy who for so long had been in love with her. He was too scared of rejection to say anything. And thus, they both continued their daily lives not knowing. Unaware of their feelings for each other. Waiting for something to change, without even trying.

With the coming of autumn though, some hearts become bolder to reveal the love they hide inside.

Experiencing a rainbow

https://kidsarefrompluto.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/dsc_00451.jpgIt is undeniable that the key to your health lies in your diet. It is not only about the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat, but also about the color of the food on your plate. In short: the more colorful your diet, the more antioxidants you get.  We need a colorful plate of food in order to be more appealing, but also to ensure that we receive a wide range of healthy and necessary nutrients and vitamins.

But it’s not only in food that we need color.

Every aspect of our lives needs to be as colorful as possible. That is how it becomes more interesting and certainly more fun.

It is the same reason why winter months are associated with dark and dull colors, while spring and summer are characterized by a surge of bright and lively shades that generally also help lift our moods.

Not everything is black and white. And we need color in our lives to prove that we too hide inside of us a rainbow of emotions and moods that can be unleashed according to emotional state.

If you’re quiet, you’re not living. You’ve got to be noisy and colorful and lively.” –  Mel Brooks

That cleansing free shower

summer-rainThat moment when the first autumn raindrop splashes onto your head. It is remarkable isn’t it? After weeks of scorching heat and often humidity, the rain comes to salvage your water bill. Free showers. Who wouldn’t want that? That’s why you often see people smile when they feel that first cool breeze bringing home the rain.

And when the showers begin, everyone automatically looks up. As if expecting a swarm of vicious drops lining up in those dark clouds, weighing and calculating the distance, altitude and speed with which to attack.

But all that happens is that the sky finally opens up and drowns out the heat that for so many days has been stifling the land underneath. People run in all directions trying to avoid getting wet, but in the end just become all the more soaked, as they are still wearing their summer sandals, their linen shirts (that become see-through wet t-shirts) and have no umbrella. It’s fun seeing all these people so unprepared. Autumn rain does that. Particularly if it comes during a time of summer heat.

It’s just not that fun when you are the one caught on the side of the road where all the puddles are concentrated and all the cars speed by. Or when you are the one caught in the autumn storm without an umbrella. Or worse yet, when you stand under a balcony until the rage subsides, and get splashed by the waterdrops washing off the plants and tents above you. Refreshing as it may be, when it happens to you, it is truly not that funny.

All in all though, we all need a few showers in a period of draught. It helps rejuvenate, revitalize and refresh our minds and souls. It cleans out all the negative feelings and allows you to view the world with a new perspective. It is a regeneration of sorts. A necessary and much welcomed new beginning for a new season that is just starting.

The fish and the diver

Diver and fishThe saying goes that time flies when you’re having fun. Many people can testify that time passes even faster in the summer. The days are longer and yet they always appear too short. And before you know it, summer has passed and a new season approaches.

The end of vacations leaves you with a sweet lust for more – a longing for a life of eternal holiday, carefree and away from anything that causes stress and white hair to appear.

A yearning to escape the “real” life, for something more…desirable.

But given the chance, would you truly do so? There always seems to be something pulling you back. A cautious realism fighting the idealistic dream.

And it instils within you a dilemma. What would you do if you were given the chance to change your life?

Here’s a short story on this:

There once was a young man who worked as a banker. He hated the fact that his job was same in same out. There was no excitement. Nothing that sparked the adrenaline in his body. Nothing at all like diving, which he loved and would do at every opportunity he got. He dreamed of a house by the sea, where he could spend endless hours in the water with his favourite sport. But the problem was the one thing he was now occupying his days with: money. If he followed his dream, he would soon be short of cash, and have no income whatsoever. It would be much harder finding a job as a diver than as a banker.

One day, in his diving expeditions, he saw a beautiful yellow-coloured fish swimming around him. He stood still and used his snorkelling gear to take a closer look. It was a fish that seemed as sleek as the clear waters that day. And as it reflected the rays of the sun it appeared to be sparkling. As if it was wearing a crown of diamonds. The fish was not afraid of him. Far from it. It even swam right up to him. And as the diver could not resist, he stretched out his hand as if to catch it.

The fish swam right into his palm instead of away from it.

Hauling it out of the water, the diver observed the fish closely. It appeared to be staring intently at him. As if it wanted to say something.

You’re wondering what kind of a fish I am”, he suddenly heard a voice say.

“I’m enchanted. And I can change your life as you please.”

It was the fish that was speaking to him. It had a soothing feminine voice that suited its regal figure.

The diver gasped and almost dropped it back into the water. The fish was sitting still in his hand. Not gushing at all, like it would be expected from fish out of water.

“How? What? How…?” thought the dumbstruck diver.

“Here’s the issue, said the fish. “You can either kiss me and I will turn into a princess and we may end up together. Or you may say the word and you will become a fish too, here with me, swimming freely for the rest of your days without a care in the world.”

The diver was flabbergasted. What do you say to that? Do you accept a princess and endure the hardships of supporting both of you, or do you abandon the human world for that of the life aquatic?

It was a tough decision to make. But in his heart he knew what he would choose…

What would you choose?
